Can I Buy a Uverse Modem from a Third Party?

I am currently looking into getting the AT%26amp;T Uverse internet plan. In order to do this, I was told to buy the $75 Uverse modem. I want to know if I can purchase the modem off of Craigslist or Ebay for cheaper and still have it work. If so, is there anything I should be looking for in particularly (version or model)?
